Is a Deep Tissue Massage Right for You?

Is a Deep Tissue Massage Right for You?
Is deep tissue massage right for you?

One question I'm often asked is, "Should I get a deep tissue massage?"

My response is it depends on your body, your goals, and how you feel about pressure.

How to know if a deep tissue massage is what you need:

Deep tissue massage is likely right for you if

  • You have chronic muscle tightness or knots (neck, shoulders, back, hips).

  • You sit a lot, train hard, or repeat the same movements daily.

  • You feel stiff, restricted, or achy, not just stressed.

  • Light massage feels nice but doesn’t last.

  • You’re okay with strong pressure

  • You want functional improvement (mobility, pain relief), not just relaxation.

It may not be the best choice if

  • You’re looking mainly to relax or de-stress.

  • You bruise easily or dislike intense pressure.

  • You have acute inflammation, recent injury, or severe pain.

  • You have certain conditions (e.g., blood clot risk, osteoporosis, some nerve conditions) unless cleared by a healthcare provider.

  • You’re feeling run-down, sick, or emotionally fragile.

How it should feel

  • Intense but controlled and intentional.

  • Never sharp, electric, or breath-stopping.

  • You should be able to relax into it, not brace against it.

keep in mind

You don’t have to go “full deep” everywhere. A good therapist will:

  • Mix deep work with lighter techniques.

  • Adjust pressure throughout the session.

  • Focus on problem areas, not the whole body.

Bottom line

Choose deep tissue if you want lasting muscle relief and better movement. Choose something lighter if your nervous system needs calming more than your muscles need fixing.

Like everything in life, communication is key. We’ll look at what’s feeling tight or sore, how much pressure you enjoy, and whether you’re seeking relaxation, relief, or recovery, so your massage feels intentional and personalized. Together, we'll find the best massage option just for you, the one that fits your body, your preferences, and your goals.
